True colours
The bitter end of the Austrian winter sank its teeth into the weekend’s games, meaning Austrian Salzburg fans will have to wait another seven days to see their side take to the field. Undeterred, the great and the good gathered themselves for Friday night’s inauguration event.
At 19.33 precisely, almost a year to the day since Red Bull outlawed the colours and those wearing them, 600 football-starved devotees gathered in a Salzburg bar to catch a glimpse of a whole new squad of players and their brand new violet and white strip (left). It’s so new, in fact, that it still bears the tags as it’s worn here for the first time by Milan Pavlovic, former Austria Salzburg midfielder and new club captain.
Also up and running is austria-salzburg.at – the spanking new website which, true to form, is fitting of a well-run and nattily designed football club with its heart in the right place.
With such an impressive turnout, it augers well for them in a league where the best-supported sides averages gates of around 400. For many, this Saturday’s fixture at home to USC Eugendorf just can’t come soon enough.
