Austria Salzburg faced Unken this evening in their fourth game in the basement of Austrian football. They won 4-0, to go with last week’s 3-0 defeat of Trimmelkam, and the five and six goal thrashings of Leopoldskron/Moos and Liefering, respectively.

They sit proudly on top of the league with ein tordifferenz of +18 after just four games. Like AFC Wimbledon before them, they hope that their pulling power is setting them well and truly on an exhilarating journey through the leagues.

In a division where a typical attendance would normally consist of players’ relatives and local tramps, Austria Salzburg regularly take a thousand fans away from home, causing a real stir wherever they go and prompting their tiny hosts to lay on food and beer in anticipation of the arrival of the violet hoards.

I’m told that, along with Rapid Vienna, Austria Salzburg have the most passionate following in the country. The same fellow tells me that he’d “really love to see Sheffield United go back down immediately”, and that “Neil Warnock is a fucking prick”.

On that evidence, how could he possibly be wrong?
